Ultra Rock Flower Anemone
The Rock Flower Anemone is a somewhat unique member of the anemone family. They have a
distinct oral disc and tentacles, generally in contrasting colours. They get their name from their habit
of attaching themselves to the aquarium rockwork and their flowerlike appearance. They come in
an almost endless variety of colour morphs. The growth rate of specimens can vary greatly and
most will reach a maximum size of 8 inches across.
Rock Flower Anemones are found throughout the Caribbean and usually grow on the vertical rock
faces of reef rock. In a home aquarium they can be placed either on the live rock or the substrate.
They tend to be much less mobile than other species of anemone and will generally stay where they
are placed, although this is not always the case. They will not sting other rock flower anemones but
they should not be placed near different species of anemones or other corals. If placed in the
sandbed they will bury themselves so that only their oral disc and tentacles are visible.
This species of anemone prefers moderate levels of lighting and low to moderate flow. If the
tentacles appear to be “stretching” the light level may be too low and if they are overly retraced or
losing colour the light may be too intense. The flow should be sufficient to prevent debris from
building up on the anemone but not so strong that the flesh is folded over on itself.
While the Rock Flower Anemone is photosynthetic it is a carnivore and should also be spot fed
meaty foods such as chopped squid in order to remain healthy. Rock Flower Anemones propagate
sexually rather than by splitting so they are very difficult to impossible to breed in a home aquarium.
They cannot be fragged like corals.
The Rock Flower Anemone makes an interesting addition to a home aquarium provided their need
for space and feeding can be met. However, it should be noted that clownfish will not host them.
