The Royal Gramma is a peaceful basslet that adds a splash of colour to any reef tank. It is a member of the Grammidae family and is also sometimes known as the Fairy Basslet. It is a fairly small fish and it is easily recognizable by its purple and yellow colouration. It is sometimes confused with the Royal Dottyback but is distinguishable by the black dot on the front edge of its dorsal fin. It is considered to be a relatively peaceful and hardy fish.
The Royal Gramma is found in the tropical Western Atlantic Ocean. It is found at a wide variety of depths between 2 and 60 meters. It generally lives in and around reefs and rockwork and has a peculiar habit of swimming upside down along rock ledges. In a home aquarium, it requires rockwork with ample caves and ledges where it can hide. However, once it becomes accustomed to the tank it can generally be seen swimming throughout the aquarium.
The Royal Gramma is a carnivore so it should be fed a variety of meaty foods including brine shrimp, mysis shrimp and frozen foods. It will also readily accept pellet foods and these can form the bulk of their diet. They do not generally actively hunt any prey in the aquarium and so need to be fed regularly.
This fish makes an ideal aquarium resident. Their beautiful purple and yellow colours are eye-catching and their hardiness and ease of care make them an ideal choice for hobbyists of all experience levels. While they are generally peaceful, they may display aggression towards other members of the same species so it is best to only keep one Royal Gramma in a home aquarium unless it is a confirmed mated pair.
