Rhodactis Mushroom
The Rhodactis Mushroom is probably the most varied variety of corallimorph available. They come in an almost endless variety of colours and patterns, including the highly sought after “bounce” variety. They are also available at a wide variety of price points, from beginner friendly to high end. Rhodactis Mushrooms are also found in a huge variety of sizes from the massive Elephant Ear variety to the tiny Tonga Bullseye. They reproduce by splitting, with a single specimen pinching at its mouth and splitting into two heads. They do not form colonies in a traditional sense, with each head being independent.
Rhodactis Mushrooms are found throughout the Indo-Pacific including the waters off Fiji, Tonga and the Great Barrier Reef. Many of the more desirable and expensive types are aquacultured or maricultured in North America or Indonesia. They are found in bays, lagoons, reefs and around piers and docks. Since they are a low light coral, they should be placed in the bottom third of the tank on either the main rockwork or on a rock island. Many types of Rhodactis grow quite quickly, so this should be taken into consideration when choosing their initial placement. They are more tolerant of less than ideal water conditions than many other types of coral.
Rhodactis Mushrooms prefer low levels of light and flow, so they are best kept in the bottom of the tank away from strong currents. They can be placed under ledges, but should not be in total shade as they are photosynthetic. If they are receiving too much light they may begin to bubble and should be moved to a lower light area. Levels of flow that are too high may cause the coral to rip or even detach itself from the rock.
All types of Rhodactis are photosynthetic and are able to meet all of their energy needs through the aquarium lighting. Since they are such a varied species some types benefit more than others from supplemental feeding. However, a food such as Vitalis Soft Coral Food can benefit all types.
Due to their hardiness, speed of growth and the vast number of available colours the Rhodactis Mushroom is popular with both beginner and experienced hobbyists.
