Shaving brush macroalgae is a unique, ornamental, algae that originates from shallow, sandy waters. They require a well illuminated tank and will help with phosphate and nitrate reduction. Most fish and invertebrates will ignore this species however, some sea urchins may consume this algae.

Shaving Brush Macro Algae

This unique and beautiful ornamental macro algae is one that you’ll want in your saltwater aquarium. They macro algae are plentiful through the Caribbean and massive fields acres across can be found completed populated by them. They are excellent and consuming and controlling excess nutrients in almost all reef aquariums. Even just a few in your refugium or main tank can go a long way. They get their name from their resemblance to a barbers brush and are characterized by coarse bristles. Most herbivorous fish and invertebrates will not normally consume this plant, but sea urchins may uproot and consume this species.

In order to plan them just push them into sand or substrate so they can anchor, you will not be able to keep these if you have bare bottom tank.
