White Spot Anemone Shrimp (Periclimenes brevicarpalis)

The White Spot anemone Shrimp, or Glass Shrimp, are a peaceful , discrete, shrimp that are non aggressive and easy to keep. You don't need anemone to keep this shrimp happy. If you have anemone they will host as protection from predators and rarely leave the anemone even when no predators are present. They are able to live within the stinging tentacles of the anemone due to a mucus coat covering their shell that is collected from their anemone. They will loose this slime coating when they molt. Since they do not have their protective coating at this time, they will stay near the anemone and collect more to build up protection again. They will then return back to their host anemone. This species can live with many of its kind within the same host.

These dwarf boxing shrimp are peaceful and grow to only 2” or so. Some other Stenopus species such as the more commonly seen Boxing shrimp/Banded coral shrimp are well renowned fish eaters that are docile as juveniles and then turn into sly, crafty, and powerful predators as they get larger. Fortunately you don’t get those problems with this rarer dwarf species.

SIZE
Up to 2”.

COMPATIBILITY
May attack very tiny inhabitants such as small Trimma gobies or Sexy shrimp. Safe with anything bigger than 1”. Safe with all corals, and all inverts except very small shrimp species (eg Sexy shrimp). Small inverts such as these may be eaten by some fish such as Triggers, Puffers, etc.

The Tiger Pistol Shrimp is an omnivorous tunneler that is constantly working on a cave system throughout your tank. They are excellent sand turning inverts that help remove bound organic waste from polluting the water column. They create a noise with their pincers that can easily be confused with a mantis shrimp. However, they pose no threat to your glass and tank inhabitants. These shrimp will pair up with different cave gobies creating a bennificial symbiotic relationship. The poor sighted pistol shrimp is warned, by the better sighted goby, if there are predators nearbyand in return, it shares its food with the goby.

Peppermint Shrimp are best known for their natural predation on pest anemones aiptasia. All four varieties of Peppermint shrimp are known to eat aiptasia, however, some individuals are more prone to seek out aiptasia while others may ignore them. We find that this is usually based on food availability, as they are more inclined to eat leftover fish food than aiptasia. This is due to their scavenger nature.
